Planning a trip to the Big Apple? New York City offers a vibrant and bustling experience, full of exciting attractions and endless opportunities. As you prepare for your adventure, it’s crucial to pack wisely to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable stay. In this article, we’ll explore the essentials to include in your bag for your next trip to New York City.

Good Shoes

One thing you’ll quickly discover about New York City is that it’s a walking city. Whether you’re exploring Central Park, strolling through Times Square, or navigating the historical streets of Lower Manhattan, comfortable shoes are a must. Opt for supportive footwear that can withstand long hours of walking without causing discomfort.

Jill’s a fan of Toms and I can vouch for Vessi and Arc’teryx shoes.

Backup Shoes

Even the best pair of shoes can experience unexpected wear and tear. It’s always a good idea to pack a backup pair in case your primary shoes become uncomfortable or unusable. Having an extra pair will ensure you can continue exploring without discomfort.

The other thing to keep in mind is the sheer amount of walking that you do in New York City, so having pair drying out without stopping your trip will be a blessing in disguise.

Water Bottle

Staying hydrated is essential, especially when you’re out and about in a bustling city like New York. Carrying a reusable water bottle will not only save you money but also help you reduce plastic waste. Many parks and public spaces in the city have water fountains or refill stations, making it convenient to stay hydrated on the go.

Expensive Drinks

While New York City offers an array of delicious beverages, it’s important to note that prices can be higher than expected. If you have specific preferences or enjoy upscale beverages, consider packing your favorite expensive drinks to enjoy during your trip. Avoid relying solely on chain stores for beverages, as they might not have the quality or variety you desire.

No Dollar Store

There is no official dollar store in New York City, so you may have to rely on retail shops like Target or Walgreens – but don’t be afraid to price shop. Things can get really expensive if you buy at the first store.

Double the Clothes

New York City is a fashion-forward destination, and you’ll likely want to look your best while exploring the city streets. Pack a variety of clothing options, including comfortable casual wear for daytime sightseeing and stylish outfits for evenings out. Don’t forget to check the weather forecast before your trip to ensure you pack suitable attire for the season.

No Snacks—Dollar Pizza

New York City is known for its iconic dollar slice pizzerias, which offer delicious and affordable options for a quick bite. Instead of packing snacks, take advantage of these budget-friendly pizza places to satisfy your hunger while immersing yourself in the city’s culinary culture.

Cash—Lots of $1, $5, $10

While credit cards are widely accepted in most establishments, it’s always a good idea to carry some cash, especially smaller bills. Tipping is customary in New York City, so having a supply of $1, $5, and $10 bills will allow you to show appreciation for good service without hassle. Additionally, some places, such as food carts or smaller vendors, might prefer cash payments.

Remember to also pack any essential personal items, such as toiletries, medication, and electronic devices. It’s wise to have a portable charger for your phone to ensure you can stay connected throughout the day.

By packing these essentials, you’ll be well-prepared to make the most of your New York City trip. Whether you’re exploring the iconic landmarks, enjoying the city’s vibrant culture, or indulging in its culinary delights, having the right items in your bag will enhance your experience and make your trip more enjoyable. So, lace up your comfortable shoes, grab your water bottle, and get ready to embark on an unforgettable adventure in the city that never sleeps!
